Follow these 5 steps to make an existing small bathroom seem larger, and the space work better for you. Some ideas are simple, others will require more extensive remodeling to get results, here's how to go about it:
  1. Lighting, lighting, lighting. Eliminate any dark shadowy corners with adequate light. You can create the illusion of height by focusing low-wattage indirect lighting onto the ceiling – ie a good place to put hidden lights is to get a built in frame around the mirror, placing your lights within the bulkhead.
  2. Do not use fixtures that are too large for the bathroom. Large free-standing baths or a huge built in vanity will not work in a small space, rather opt for a corner shower and a pedestal sink which will take up much less space, (although you will lose out on some storage space).
  3. Use minimal visual & physical clutter. Try to use only one material, ie. tile for floors, walls & splashbacks. Stay away from frilly curtains, rather use a simple, sleek blind. Keep it clean, get rid of unnecessary clutter!
  4. Use large mirrors to make walls look like windows and the space appear bigger.
  5. Use a light neutral 'airy' colour, – nothing too dramatic!
